When it comes to lighting, more and more people these days are going for LEDs. This is easy to understand. After all, these types of lights are marketed as ones that do not produce heat. In a way, things is true. When touched, LED lights are cool compared to other lighting fixtures such as the fluorescent or the incandescent ones. This is because LED does not produce heat through IR or infrared radiation.
IR or infrared heating is used to heat incandescent bulbs as well as many other light sources. This is why when one touches these lighting fixtures, they are hot. This makes LED lights very useful especially for places that need light but cannot be exposed to heat as in the case of illuminating food, reef tanks, or grow lights.
But it is important to understand though that while LED may be cool to the touch, it does not mean that the device does not produce any heat at all. It still does. In fact, the LEDs may even produce a lot of unwanted heat which comes from the semiconductors that are used to generate the light. There are a lot of LEDs that are designed to be high-powered. It is important to note though that LED does not easily fail in a single setting. When there is higher internal temperature, expect that there is going to be faster deterioration of the LED lighting as well. So, it should be the main goal to keep the internal temperature low, and the presence of a reliable heat sink is going to help ensure that.

One of the most important reasons why heat sinks are very crucial part of a LED lighting system is because they make it possible for the heat from the LED source of light towards the outside elements. They are effective at dissipating the power through convection, conduction, or through radiation.
It is very important to consider the material that that heat sink is made of as well. The conductivity of the material can directly affect the overall efficiency of the heat sink to successfully dissipate the heat. Copper is always an ideal choice due to its ability to dissipate more heat. However, it is not always practical for many manufacturers to use it due to how expensive it can be. This is why, through less efficient, aluminum is more widely used instead. For smaller LEDs, thermoplastics can be used. This is an ideal option especially for smaller LED lighting fixtures that have a much lower requirement for heat dissipation. Thermoplastics as material for heat sinks has since been considered quite useful in the industry due to how they can be easily modeled in different shapes. They tend to be lightweight as well.
Aside from the material that the heat sink is made of, the finish is also another factor to be taken into consideration as well. This is because it can have a direct effect towards the thermal conductivity of the heat sink. Surfaces that are painted tend to work more effectively when compared to the ones that are unpainted or bright ones. The same is also true when it comes to etching heat sinks or anodizing them as this will decrease their overall resistance to heat. This, in turn, makes them good components when it comes to better and more effective heat sink.
It is very important though that you take the time to find out what kind of heat sink is most suitable for the LED lighting that you are going to use them for. Considering the size and power of the light as well as the length of time that it will be used should be taken into account when you decide which heat sink to go for.
