Carmanah produces some of the wood industry's highest quality and robust chippers for waste-wood and whole-log applications. With more than 80 years experience, the company has manufactured more than 350 chippers installed in pulp woodrooms, 'stand-alone' chip plants, sawmill and planer mill sites throughout the world.
In October 2005, Carmanah purchased the Chipper business unit from Nicholson Manufacturing Ltd. The acquisition increases Carmanah’s range of products, adding drum and veneer chippers, as well as a larger range of whole-log disc chippers.

Carmanah offers DISC chippers in 3 distinct styles - the first, branded as the "Super Chipper" line is a premium chipper that incorporates many features and design elements not found in competitor's chippers.
This includes the 55-65" Super Chippers as well as the 76" and 96" Chippers.
The second style includes the High Volume Whole Log Disc Chippers that offer high capacity and processing of larger wood diameters. This line also includes smaller Disc Chippers from the former Nicholson line.
The third is our recently updated "Advantage" line which offers high performance at a reduced capital investment.
Super Chipper Benefits
- Smooth back and contoured disc minimizes chip damage.
- Reduced knife to anvil clearance improves chipping consistency.
- Cast disc increases disc strength and stiffness in critical areas maximizing efficiency.
- Low disc RPM pins and fines production.
- Re-circulating ring maximizes chip recovery.
- Swing away side anvil door has shear bolts to protect disc from damage.
- J-Spout design provides improved processing of surges and wide slabs.
Super Chipper Design Features
Arbor
Machined from high strength alloy steel, the arbor is keyed to the disc and pressed with an interference fit.
Base
Fabricated from heavy plate steel, the base is stress relieved before manufacturing. The back inside face of the base is sloped to minimize chip damage from impact.
Bearings
The thrust bearing employs taper roller bearings adjusted to give minimum axial end play, resulting in a very close knife to anvil setting. The float bearing is an SKF spherical roller bearing in a solid steel housing. Carmanah uses a straddle-bearing design. This design was selected over the less costly cantilevered bearing design because it provides more disc stability. Stability in a chipper is important and necessary in order to maintain tight and consistent clearance between the knives and anvils. The end result is the production of a superior and more consistent chip than that produced with the cantilevered design.
Disc
Cast from high quality steel, the disc is fully machined and contoured on the back for maximum rigidity. This allows closer knife to anvil setting for maximum chipping efficiency. There are no projections on the back of the disc to damage chips. The disc is stress relieved, magnafluxed and balanced.
