CARMANAH Design and Manufacturing Inc. (CARMANAH), a privately-owned Canadian company located in Vancouver, Canada, designs and manufactures equipment for the forest industry.  Located at the present Vancouver site for over 90 years, CARMANAH provides Capital Equipment, Parts, and Repair Services to wood processors, panel manufacturers and pulp and paper mills.

Providing leading edge technology and equipment to optimize fibre utilization for the production of wood-based panels, CARMANAH’s products include SmartDISC and SmartRING Stranders and Panel Testing equipment, for the oriented strand board market.  As a global leader in stranding technology, CARMANAH holds an impressive 80% of the market share in this field.

Equipment for the sawmill industry, and pulp and paper industry includes Chippers, Screens and Debarkers.  In October 2005, Carmanah purchased the Chipper business unit from Nicholson Manufacturing Ltd.  The acquisition increases Carmanah’s range of products, adding drum and veneer chippers, as well as a larger range of whole-log disc chippers.  In North America, CARMANAH has a license agreement to manufacture and sell the Fuji King Debarker.  Since bringing this rotary technology to North America in the early 1990’s, the product has done extremely well with sales of over 40 units to North American mills.
CARMANAH is a major service center for pulp and paper equipment, and also offers its customers the services of its lab testing facilities in Vancouver, for stranding.   Many of CARMANAH’s employees are graduates of local technical institutions such as British Columbia Institute of Technology, and the engineering and forestry faculties of the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University.

In May 2003, CAE Machinery Ltd., changed names when the company changed its ownership.  The new owners are an experienced team made up of an MBO (Management Buy Out) combined with Birch Hill Equity Partners.  The name ‘Carmanah’ was chosen in honour of the renowned Carmanah Valley on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island, a protected area that's home to an extremely complex forest ecosystem.
